Frank Abel

lafayette_afro_rock_band_frank_abel_3The son of Francis and Hazel Abel Sr., born February 3rd, 1946 in Philadelphia, PA. Frank grew up in Brooklyn, NY known as Frankie Jr. and went to the prestigious Music and Art High School as a classical violinist. After moving to Roosevelt, NY, Frank attended Howard University, where he earned a Bachelors Degree in Music Education. While attending Howard, he became a member of OMEGA PSI PHI FRATERNITY, INC. and PHI MU ALPHA SINFONIA MUSIC FRATERNITY. After graduation from Howard, Frank taught vocal music at Mulligan Jr. High School in Central Islip, NY during the day and performed in various New York nightclubs, as a singer and keyboardist, with own Rhythm and Blues bands.

For a decade, from 1969 to 1979, Frank and his band LAFAYETTE AFRO ROCK BAND (aka, ICE, CRISPY & CO., CAPTAIN DAX, BOBBY BOYD CONGRESS) played the club and concert scene from Canada, Europe and Africa, calling Paris, France their home away from home. Recording and living the life most musicians only dream about.

King Band; The first live U.S. Tour by Grace Jones; Beckett Recording Artist Colors; jazz saxophonist Oliver Lake; ex-Temptation Damon Harris; Co-Producer and Arranger for Colors First Album, which featured such artists as Jocelyn Brown, Luther Vandross, Viciki Sue Robinson, The Chic Strings, Jazz Saxophonist Chico Freeman, and Bassist Marcus Miller; Co-Composer of title song for the musical “Of One Mind” written by Attlilla Shabazz and Yolanda King; performed in the “Tell Her About It” Billy Joel Video; Numerous Recording And Arranging sessions with such artists as: PM Jazz Band, Hips,Take-3, Aku-Aku,Frankie Smith (from the group Sha-Na-Na) and The Invitations; Keyboardist with Jazz-Rock Ensemble Tsongo; Salsa Orchestra Elektrik Amente; Frank Abel And Friends Orchestra; and Keyboards on The Rock-N-Roll Hall Of Fame Rap Group – Public Enemy: “Apocolypse 91…The Enemy Strikes Back” Def Jam/Columbia Platinum Album.


Performed at the Euro-Woodstock and Juan-Les-Pins Jazz Festivals; toured Spain; France; Germany, Africa, and the Benelux Countries with the Fantasy Records Jazz-Rock Group Ice; Guest Conductor and Pianist for the First International Music And Film Festival, Istanbul, Turkey (1977); Guest Organist for Rock-N-Roll Hall Of Fame Blues Singer Etta James at the Montreaux Jazz Festival (1975); Musical Director and Organist for a 50-city European Tour of former World Heavy Weight Boxing Champion Joe Frazier; recorded with French singing star Nino Ferrer; recorded and performed with the Lafayette Afro Rock Band.
